Object
Appearance
People use the word object (pronounce: OB-ject) to refer to physical things that we can touch and see, but never to refer to people or animals.
People generally call things like trees, houses, and cars objects.
Object is also the device used for mathematical purposes.
Compare: Subject
To object (pronounced: ob-JECT) is the verb. It means to dislike something so that you protest against it:
- "I object to people smoking".
- "Would you object if I sat here?" (or, very formally: "Have you any objections to my sitting here?").
There is no opposite to the verb 'object'. (To 'subject' (sub-JECT) has the different meaning).
