Church
A church is the group of people who have the same religious beliefs. Sometimes the word church is used to mean the building where prayers and religious meetings are held. It is usually used to talk about groups of Christians or Christian buildings.
Some Christian church buildings are called cathedrals or chapels.
Some churches meet in very small buildings or in the space that is used for some other purpose, like the store or warehouse. Some churches hold meetings outdoors. Other churches have religious services in buildings that are very old or large and have beautiful works of art. Many famous paintings, statues, or other art can be found in some of the buildings used for church meetings. Some church buildings have beautiful windows made of colored glass. The design of the church building is meant to inspire the people in it.
Many tourists travel to see famous or beautiful churches. Many of the most famous ones are in Europe.
Some famous church buildings are:
- St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican in Rome, which is one of the largest churches in the world and the center of the Roman Catholic religion.
- The Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris.
- Westminster Abbey in London. Many famous English people are buried here, and when the United Kingdom (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales) creates the new King or Queen, the ceremony takes place in Westminster Abbey.
- Saint Paul's Cathedral, also in London.
