This is a test wiki that runs on the MediaWiki software. Ordinarily it runs the same version of the code as mediawiki.org (plus other wikis in "group 0"), but may be configured differently with experimental features. The contents of this site may be volatile and buggy.

The current version of MediaWiki running on this wiki is 1.46.0-wmf.1 (89a30a1). See Wikipedia:Configuration and wikitech:testwiki and InitialiseSettings.php for information about the configuration of this wiki.

What we do on this wiki

This is a website for the developers of Wikimedia wikis (that means a number of well-known wikis, including those below) to test their latest coding. This site is a "testing area" of sorts, which allows code to be tested in a controlled environment, without damaging other wikis. This wiki can also be used as a classroom to teach basic wiki editing without damaging other wikis.

This is not Wikipedia or any other content wiki — for those, see below. This site is only a testing ground for developers. There's not much you can do here unless you're testing code; if you're looking to contribute content, you may wish to visit one of the Wikimedia Projects below.

Please note: there is a beta test cluster created as a replacement for prototype.wikimedia available here. It is a clone of all production wikis, where developers and regular users can test new features before we deploy them to production wiki. In case you want to test gadgets or user scripts on any Wikimedia project, you can also use that site. test.wikipedia.org is not for testing of unreviewed software or MediaWiki, it is a last place where software is deployed before it goes to live production. New software, extensions and gadgets can be deployed immediately to the deployment cluster.

Please read before contributing here

The Wikipedia Test Wiki is not:

  • A place to put content or anything meaningful;
  • An area to play with administrator's tools. If you are looking for that, see testwiki:Wikipedia:Requests/Tools;
  • A place where you can test AutoWikiBrowser (AWB) before being given permission to use it;
  • Where nonsense articles will stick;
  • A web host, wiki host, or files (video, image etc.) host;
  • A test for new projects or language versions of Wikipedia, see Incubator and Wikispore instead;
  • Where you can get away with everything;
  • Where libel will be tolerated;
  • A community.

...at least from what I've heard.

The Wikipedia Test Wiki is for developers to test their code without breaking all of Wikimedia and blowing up the world.

The Wikipedia Test Wiki may also be used in a classroom environment for teaching basic wiki editing to avoid the great confusion resulting from creating pages and breaking a regular project, although this may not always be desirable because of the occasional difference between the test interface and a typical Wikimedia project interface.

Administrators, also called sysops - short for system operators, are editors that have access to technical features that help keep Wikipedia running smoothly. They have access to these features because they are meant to be trusted by the community, but this does not make them better or more important than anybody else. The opinion of an administrator, for example, should not be more valid than the opinion of a person who chooses to edit Wikipedia with an IP address because they have administrator rights.

Things administrators can do:

If you would like to become an administrator, please create a nomination request in this section, but please look at the archives first so you can see why other people's requests have failed or succeeded. Jimbo Wales, the founder of the Wikimedia Foundation, said "this should be no big deal".

Bureaucrat

An automated list of accounts with bureaucrat status is available at Special:ListUsers/bureaucrat.

A bureaucrat is a slightly higher administrative level that can perform a few additional functions. Bureaucrats can give administrator or bureaucrat status to other users following a successful request on this page. Bureaucrats can also help users who want to change user names. They can also "flag" bots, which means to hide their contributions from the new changes and put them in the bot group. Requests for name changes should be made directly to the talk page of one of the listed bureaucrats.

List of administrators

An automated list of accounts with admin status is available at Special:Listadmins.

Current issues and requests

Users can contact administrators on this page to ask them to protect pages. Requests for deletion should be made on Requests for deletion and requests for blocking on vandalism in progress.

All administrators should watch this section for issues that they should be aware of and for news about policy changes that may affect them.

See his request here.
