Mamadou Gassama
Test for test 2 Mamadou Gassama is a Malian immigrant in France who, on 26 May 2018, climbed four storeys up a block of flats in Paris in 30 seconds to save a four year old boy hanging from a balcony.[1][2]
The childs father had apparently left the boy unattended to go shopping, and was subsequently charged with leaving his son unsupervised.[3]
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo called the 22-year-old Mamadou Spiderman of the 18th, as the rescue happened in the citys 18th arrondissement (district). The nickname spread quickly and widely in international media headlines.[4][5]
On 28 May 2018, President Emmanuel Macron met Gassama at the Elysee Palace to thank him personally. He gave him a gold medal and a certificate for courage, offered him a role in the fire service, and promised to make him a French citizen.[6][7]
Mamadou Gassama was born in 1996 in Mali. He travelled to Europe via Burkina Faso, Niger and Libya, where he was arrested and beaten. He crossed the Mediterranean, and obtained papers to stay legally in Italy, but came to France in September 2017 to join his elder brother.[8]
Reports emphasized the similarity between Mamadou Gassama and Lassana Bathily, as this is now the second time that a Moslem immigrant from Mali has been hailed as a hero in France and offered French citizenship for his bravery.[9]
